Automotive Manufacturing: Paint Booth and Process Exhaust
Automotive paint booths generate overspray that accumulates in exhaust ducts as a flammable, sticky, multi-layer coating. This is a serious fire hazard — paint residue in ducts can ignite from a spark or hot work, with catastrophic results. NFPA 33 (Spray Application Using Flammable or Combustible Materials) governs these systems. Cleaning requires: hot water pressure washing (Gaolijie D7-5 at 80-100C to soften and remove cured paint residue), chemical pre-treatment for heavily built-up overspray, explosive atmosphere precautions (intrinsically safe equipment, continuous atmosphere monitoring), and careful waste capture (paint residue is often classified as hazardous waste). Electronics and Semiconductor Manufacturing: Cleanroom HVAC
Semiconductor fabs and electronics cleanrooms operate at ISO Class 3-7 (fewer than 35,200 particles per cubic meter at ISO 7, down to 35 particles at ISO 3). Duct cleaning in these environments is not about removing visible dirt — it is about maintaining particle-count specifications measured in parts per billion. Requirements: ultra-HEPA (U15-U17) negative air, post-cleaning particle certification testing, full bunny suit and cleanroom protocol compliance by all crew members, and cleaning agents and lubricants that are cleanroom-compatible (no silicones, no outgassing materials). This is specialized, high-value work — cleanroom-certified duct cleaning commands 3-5x standard commercial rates.
Metalworking and Foundry: Abrasive and High-Temperature Ducts
Foundry ventilation ducts carry sand, metal grinding dust, and casting combustion products. The abrasiveness of metal dust physically wears duct interiors, reducing wall thickness over time. Cleaning must be done carefully — aggressive mechanical cleaning of already-thinned duct walls can cause perforation. Before cleaning: ultrasonic thickness testing to identify thin sections that cannot withstand mechanical cleaning. In foundries, ducts also carry high-temperature exhaust (200-500F), which bakes contaminants into hard, ceramic-like deposits that resist conventional cleaning. The E200 heavy-duty robot with aggressive brush types is required. Manual entry into foundry ducts is absolutely prohibited — these are among the most dangerous duct environments in industry.
Food Processing Plants: Hygiene-Sensitive Manufacturing
Food processing facilities (bakeries, dairy, meat processing, beverage) have duct systems that must meet FDA and USDA hygiene requirements alongside standard HVAC cleanliness. Unique contaminants: flour dust (explosive at certain concentrations — NFPA 61 governs), sugar dust (hygroscopic, sticky, promotes microbial growth), dairy product residue (high-fat, rancid odor), and meat processing particulate (biohazard risk). Cleaning must use food-grade cleaning agents. Post-cleaning ATP (adenosine triphosphate) swab testing verifies organic residue removal. Duct access panels must be food-grade gasketed and sealed. Documentation is critical — food manufacturers answer to FDA inspectors, third-party auditors (SQF, BRC, FSSC 22000), and their retail customers.
