Why Post-Construction Duct Cleaning Matters
Construction debris in ducts is a universal problem. Drywall dust, sawdust, fasteners, insulation fibers, and general construction detritus accumulate in ductwork during construction and are distributed throughout the building when the HVAC system is first activated. Post-construction duct cleaning, specified correctly, ensures that the building occupants first breath of air is clean. SECTION 23 33 00 — HVAC DUCT CLEANING
PART 1 — GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY: This section includes post-construction cleaning of all HVAC supply, return, and outside air ductwork; air handling unit interiors; and terminal units as indicated on drawings.
1.2 REFERENCE STANDARDS: NADCA ACR 2021 — Assessment, Cleaning, and Restoration of HVAC Systems; ASHRAE 62.1 — Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality; SMACNA — HVAC Duct Construction Standards.
1.3 SUBMITTALS: Submit cleaning methodology statement, equipment specifications (including robot type, camera resolution, HEPA filtration rating), sample before/after documentation from previous projects, and technician NADCA ASCS certifications.
PART 2 — PRODUCTS: 2.1 Cleaning equipment shall include robotic brush cleaning system with minimum 1080P HD video documentation capability. 2.2 HEPA filtration shall be minimum H13 rated (99.97% capture at 0.3 micron) for all negative air systems used during cleaning. 2.3 Access panels shall be manufacturer-approved, gasketed, and insulated to match duct construction.
PART 3 — EXECUTION: 3.1 Protect all occupied spaces, finishes, and equipment from dust migration during cleaning. 3.2 Establish negative air pressure in duct section being cleaned using HEPA-filtered vacuum system. 3.3 Mechanically clean all duct surfaces using robotic brush system with 360-degree rotation. 3.4 Provide continuous video documentation of entire cleaning process. 3.5 Upon completion, verify cleanliness per NADCA ACR surface cleanliness criteria. 3.6 Deliver final documentation package including before/after video for all duct sections.
