When Disaster Strikes, Ducts Become a Health Hazard
After a fire, flood, or major water event, the HVAC duct system transforms from a comfort system into a contamination distribution network. Smoke-laden ducts circulate carcinogenic particulates. Flood-water in ducts breeds mold within 48-72 hours. Emergency duct cleaning requires different protocols, different equipment, and a much faster response timeline than routine maintenance. This guide covers what restoration contractors need to know.
Post-Fire Duct Cleaning: Smoke and Soot Removal
Fire produces three types of smoke residue, each requiring different cleaning approaches:

Critical equipment for post-fire work: The K8 HEPA system is non-negotiable. Fire soot contains carcinogens including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, and formaldehyde. HEPA H13 filtration captures 99.97% of these particulates at 0.3 microns. A standard shop vac simply re-aerosolizes them throughout the building.
Post-Flood Duct Cleaning: Water, Mud, and Sewage
Flood water in ducts introduces three categories of contamination, defined by the IICRC S500 standard:
- Category 1 (Clean Water): From broken supply lines, rainwater, melting ice. Least urgent but still requires rapid drying -- mold colonization begins at 48-72 hours.
- Category 2 (Gray Water): From washing machines, dishwashers, sump pump failures. Contains significant contamination. Requires antimicrobial treatment after cleaning.
- Category 3 (Black Water): From sewage backups, river/sea flooding, toilet overflows. Contains pathogens, toxic substances. Severely contaminated ducts should typically be replaced, not cleaned.
For Category 1 and 2 water events where duct cleaning is appropriate:
- Extract standing water immediately: Every hour of standing water increases mold probability.
- Deploy drying equipment: High-volume air movers + industrial dehumidifiers. Target: below 60% RH within 48 hours.
- Mechanical cleaning with antimicrobial: After ducts are dry, use the Gaolijie D2 sprayer to apply EPA-registered antimicrobial. Follow with mechanical brushing.
- HEPA extraction: Use the K8 HEPA system to capture all dislodged contaminated particulate.
